GAC Filter Backflushing

City and Municipal water GAC (Granular Activated Carbon) filter flushing involves a “backwash” procedure where a strong flow of water is reversed through the GAC filter bed to remove accumulated contaminants and debris, essentially cleaning the carbon particles and restoring their adsorption capacity, This is usually done periodically as part of routine maintenance to ensure optimal filtration performance. Hydrologics Zero Discharge Flushing achieves the high flow rates need to successfully backwash GAC filters and captures the contaminated backwash water for disposal.

Process steps:

  • Isolation: The GAC filter is isolated from the water supply line.
  • Backwash initiation: A high flow rate of water is directed upwards through the filter bed, causing the GAC particles to expand and lift slightly.
  • Suspension and removal: The backwash flow dislodges and flushes out trapped particles and debris from the filter bed.
  • Flow reduction: Once the filter is sufficiently cleaned, the backwash flow rate is gradually reduced to settle the GAC bed back into its normal position
